“You can be the most gifted preacher, the most compassionate counselor, and the most organized administrator, but if you are running in the opposite direction of your senior pastor’s vision, you are going to tear the church fabric apart.”
G. DeMarcus Lewis — Beyond the Pulpit
Welcome to AM-602
Welcome to AM-602 — The Ministry and Mechanics of the Associate Minister. You have completed AM-601. You understand the calling. You have internalized the theological dignity of the supporting role. You know what you are not, you know what you are, and you carry the formation that the character course was designed to build. Now the question changes. It moves from who are you? to what do you do? From the interior to the exterior. From formation to function. From the spirit of the associate minister to the skill of the associate minister.
This is where many associate ministers have been lost. Not because they lacked character — AM-601 was designed to address that. But because no one ever sat them down and said: this is specifically what the role looks like in practice. This is what excellent worship assistance looks like. This is how you build trust with the pastoral team. This is how you navigate the political landscape of the local church without losing your integrity or your effectiveness. This is what vision alignment actually requires of you on a Tuesday afternoon when no one is watching. This is how you handle conflict, how you carry the support calling in the daily texture of ministry life, and — when the time comes — how you leave well.
AM-602 answers those questions with the specificity they deserve. Eight lessons. Eight domains of associate minister competency. Each one grounded in the same theological framework that AM-601 established, now applied to the practical realities of what it means to serve effectively in this role, in this church, under this pastor, in this season.
What This Course Addresses
- Lesson 1: Understanding Your Role — The specific, practical, daily responsibilities of the associate minister across every dimension of the ministry context, and how to build the role clarity that prevents the confusion AM-601 diagnosed
- Lesson 2: Ministerial Basics During Worship — The specific worship assistance protocols that Bishop Willis documents: Sunday service, funerals, communion, the order of service, dress, presence, and the preparation disciplines that make worship assistance excellent
- Lesson 3: Building Strong Relationships — The collaboration dynamics, communication practices, and trust-building investments that make the associate minister a genuinely valued member of the pastoral team
- Lesson 4: Navigating Church Dynamics — The political landscape of the local church, how to move through it with integrity, and how to maintain the beside posture when the congregation’s internal tensions make that posture costly
- Lesson 5: Vision Alignment — The heartbeat of the house, strategic implementation of the senior pastor’s direction, and how to connect personal passion with communal purpose
- Lesson 6: Support and Serve — The daily mechanics of the support calling: what excellent teamwork looks like, how to build the bridge function, and how to carry the pastoral care load that makes the senior pastor’s leadership possible
- Lesson 7: Conflict Resolution and Mediation — The roots of church conflict, the personality dynamics that produce friction, and the specific peacemaking strategies that the associate minister carries as a primary tool
- Lesson 8: Leaving Well — When the season ends, how to honor the transition, the protocol for departure, and how to protect every relationship that the ministry built
How to Use This Course
AM-602 follows the same BARM LTI Masterclass standard established in AM-601: Scripture anchor, lesson objectives, substantive teaching in clearly marked sections, callout boxes for key principles, and a six-question Reflection and Application table for personal formation work. The reflection questions remain the most important part of each lesson — where the teaching meets the actual texture of your ministry life. Do not skip them.
The practical orientation of this course means that each lesson is designed to be applied immediately. As you work through each domain — worship assistance, relationship-building, conflict navigation — ask yourself honestly: how am I actually doing in this area right now? Not how you aspire to do it. How you are actually doing it today. The gap between those two answers is where AM-602 does its most important work.
AM-602 is the second course of the three-part So You Want To Be An Associate Minister Masterclass series. It builds directly on the formation of AM-601 and provides the foundation for AM-603 — The Growth and Future of the Associate Minister. Complete them in order. The spirit before the skill. The skill before the future.
A Word Before You Begin
The associate minister who has genuinely done the work of AM-601 — who has settled the identity question, internalized the dignity of the supporting role, and built the character foundation that every competency must rest on — is now ready for the specific, practical, honest instruction that AM-602 provides. The formation was not preparation for something else. It was preparation for this: the daily, unglamorous, deeply significant work of serving the local church excellently as the associate minister God has called you to be.
Competency without character is dangerous. Character without competency is incomplete. AM-601 built the character. AM-602 builds the competency. Together they produce the fully equipped associate minister that your senior pastor needs, your congregation deserves, and your calling requires.
The associate minister who does not have clear, honest role clarity is an associate minister who will spend their energy in the wrong places, step into territory that belongs to someone else, and produce friction that their gifts were never meant to generate. Lesson 01 gives you the role clarity that makes everything else in this course possible. Begin there.
